I believe...
1. That roads are a public resource paid for out of general taxation, and are for the use of all citizens.
2. That apart from legally authorised officials, nobody has a special moral claim to the roads which allows them to disregard the rights or safety of others.
3. That the design and regulation of roads should seek to maximise their usefulness as a safe shared resource, not minimize the journey times of a particular class of users.
4. That my safety comes ahead of your convenience, and your safety ahead of my convenience.
5. That it is my business how far I am willing to trade off my safety against my convenience, within the law, and that whatever decision I make has no bearing on your responsibilities towards me.
6. That the fact *you* wouldn't do what I'm doing does not mean I shouldn't do it.
7. That the faster, heavier and harder your vehicle is, the greater the dangers it poses to others, and so the greater your responsibility to act prudently and carefully at all times.
8. That the fact that you could go faster if I were not here, or I could if you were not, is of no relevance to how we both should behave.
9. That most of us do stupid things when we're in a hurry. So set off earlier.
10. That there may be a child lying directly in your path, just out of sight. If you can stop before you hit it, you are probably doing most things right.
