Following on from some initial discussions with City of York Council and kicking around ideas within the committee, I'm putting this out to invite people to get involved in a couple of upcoming cycling events in York. These are:-

15th/16th August - York Festival of Cycling - events in Parliament Street and activities/rides based from Rowntree Park. Opportunity for Clifton to be involved in having a stand, running activities, leading rides. Suggestions welcomed.

12 September - Tour of Britain stage finish in York - opportunity to have a stand and to organise have-a-go activities for the public.

Both events will have resources from the Cycling Demonstration Town funding available, so there could be funds to cover costs of activities.

Both would seem to be great chances to get the word out there about cycling and how Clifton can help people get on their bikes and ride. Lots of new members and hopefully a good PR opportunity to show everyone that we're reasonable people. A good chance to raise the profile of our planned Go-Ride status too. And both events should be fun.

If you'd like to be involved then come along to Brigantes (the unofficial clubroom) at 7pm on Monday 20th July. In the meantime I'll get as much info as I can from the council and will see if they can attend too.

It would be really great to see some new faces! Clifton now has nearly 200 members - almost half of you joined for the first time this year. As any of you who came out to the Come And Try It yesterday will know, putting just a little time into things like this is a great way to meet fellow club members and share your enthusiasm. Come along!

Re the Cycling Festival:-
On press at the moment is a general flyer, promoting the key details of the event. I’ll have these by Friday and can get these to you in advance of your meeting – despite being very tempted by the offer of a drink, unfortunately I can’t join you. However, just let me know how best to get the flyers to you and how many you need and I’ll ensure you have them.

I have just had confirmation that we can have Dean Downing, National Criterium Champion to come along to this event. He rides for the Rapha Condor team. We need to decide exactly when we want Dean there, how he can fit into the programme and what we want him to do!

We can also get the ToB mascot (ToBi) to come along too if we want to keep the little people happy and engaged.

RE: ToB event.
Pre-event – we’re keen to look at anyway’s we can build awareness of the event so opportunities to help us spread the word would be very much appreciated. The ToB are looking for volunteers for the day (incentivised by a rather nice goody bag and a great prize draw for tickets to a major cycling event.) details at http://www.tourofbritain.co.uk/_ns_volunteer/

The agenda for the day (aside from the race) - is not yet finalised. We’re keen to have as much happening on the stray and the race stretch as possible so all ideas welcome. We can have use of the course between 10am and 1.30pm. So at this stage – we’re open to your ideas and suggestions. Make them and we’ll do our absolute best to work them in – the more participation the better.

One thing that was discussed was roller racing. Someone, some time ago raised the matter of this and I remember a conversation which mentioned that another local-ish club has a full roller-racing setup in their shed somewhere. Can anyone recall this? Which club? Where? Help!

Just bumping this back to the top - The Festival of Cycling is this weekend, 11-6 today and 11-5 tomorrow. If you're out and about, especially on yer bike, please drop in to Rowntree Park, even if you've only got a few minutes spare as it would really help to have club members around to talk with people.

A good couple of days at the Festival of Cycling - lots of interest in the club and, if they all turn up, a lot of new faces should be appearing on the Saturday social rides and the Easy Riders.

Many, many thanks to Brian and Stacey, and Willy, who were there all weekend and who entertained and amazed the crowds with their exploits on rollers. And great fun at the end of it when they got Danny McAskill and the stunt crew to have a go (and half of them fell off...) - photos will go up on the website when I get around to sending them to Arthur.

Thanks also to Rab, Rich, Billy, Bex and everyone who turned up for a while, spoke to people and helped raise the profile of the club.
