08:45 - Saturday 20 Sep

Well, the weather forecast keeps changing from one minute to the next. Provided the weather holds and there isn't too much of an adverse wind we will head over to our old favourite - Brimham Rocks for a final fling before the winter weather starts to set in and we look to shorten the rides.

Usual drill - 08:45 meet for depart by 09:00. 18+ mph average expected for the ride, 70 miles square to square, so should be back for 13:00.

11 of us for the ride this morning. The wind was kind to us, the mist/rain less so. Good ride out to Brimham Rocks and a wise choice to make the right turn to Ripon rather the descent past the rocks given the slippery roads. Andy chose a soft landing and made a nice hole in the hedge on one corner as we were coming back, well held.

Big thanks to those bringing mudguards, maybe the summer bike has seen its last outing for a while. If the wet weather continues for the next few weeks please can we all revert to fitting guards.

As Mike mentions, there was a decent turnout for yesterday’s ride and, as is customary, route selection from Tony G was spot-on. The weather conditions made the roads rather slippery and it was for this reason that we decided to take a right at the top of Brimham Rocks road instead of our more usual left towards Burnt Yates. Following a short stretch down the B6265 we turned off right onto the moor road over to Laverton and Galphay, before turning left back onto the B6265 at Studley Royal cricket ground just north of Ripon. Then the standard route back to York through Boroughbridge, the Dunsforths and Aldwark Bridge.

Altogether, I recorded 87.1 miles at an average of 19.4 mph with ascent of 3,200 ft. From the square this gives around 75 miles, so a few more than normal but we still returned for 13:00. All in all, another great ride on some fantastic roads. Shame you couldn’t see too much of the scenery though! I thought that the group rode well together and we rolled into York as one. I’m looking forward to next week already.

Fingers crossed that the weather remains steady for the next few weeks; I really don’t want to put the summer bike away quite yet!
